Overview & Strategic Vision
Education is an indispensable human right and the primary catalyst for breaking intergenerational poverty. Across the isolated river islands (chars), wetland basins (Chalan Beel), and disadvantaged rural communities of northern Bangladesh, children often face severe barriers to basic schooling. Recurrent seasonal monsoons, riverbank erosion, geographical remoteness, and acute household poverty lead to high dropout rates, placing young children, especially girls, at heightened risk of early child marriage and child labor.
Through its Education for Children focus area, GKS Foundation operates community-anchored learning centers and formal educational facilities to ensure inclusive, free, and continuous foundational education for dropout, marginalized, and ethnic minority children.
Core Programs & Operational Components
Non-Formal Primary Education (NFPE):
- Targeting Dropouts: Designed in long-term partnership with BRAC since 1995, this initiative actively identifies out-of-school and dropped-out children in hard-to-reach pockets (including Tarash Upazila in Sirajganj, Chatmohar in Pabna, and Gurudaspur in Natore).
- Community Learning Centers: Operates 15 decentralized village primary schools serving hundreds of young learners, guided directly by trained female grassroots teachers and program organizers.
- Flexible Calendars: Class timetables and curricula are adapted to rural agricultural cycles and seasonal flooding, preventing schooling interruptions during peak monsoon months.
GKS Registered Non-Government Primary School:
- Established to deliver institutional, structured primary education (Grades I through V) on a dedicated 33-decimal campus in Tarash.
- Overcomes socio-economic discrimination by offering an inclusive, welcoming environment for children from impoverished and lower-income families who were previously alienated from mainstream schools.
GKS Junior Girls High School (Madhobpur, Tarash):
- Built on a 50-decimal plot specifically to protect adolescent girls’ educational continuation after primary graduation.
- Addresses a severe lack of secondary schools in remote rural zones, eliminating the safety and distance barriers that previously caused parents to discontinue girls’ education.
- Serves as a vital protective barrier against early forced child marriage and teenage pregnancy by retaining adolescent girls in formal schooling.
Parent-Teacher Engagement & Community Mobilization:
- Facilitates monthly courtyard meetings with parents, School Management Committees (SMCs), and local leaders to emphasize the necessity of foundational literacy, hygiene habits, and gender equality.
- Fosters shared accountability between communities and educational institutions to achieve near-zero dropout rates.
