Overview:

Education is a foundational pillar of GKS Foundation’s mission to eliminate generational poverty in Northern Bangladesh. In geographically isolated riverine char areas and marginalized rural villages across Sirajganj, Pabna, and Natore districts, formal schooling is frequently disrupted by annual flooding, geographic remoteness, and extreme poverty. GKS establishes accessible community learning institutions to ensure that out-of-school, vulnerable, and dropout children, particularly young girls, receive complete, high-quality primary and secondary schooling.

Core Objectives:

  • Eradicate child illiteracy and bridge educational gaps among hard-to-reach char and wetland (chalan beel) populations.
  • Prevent student dropouts and eliminate early child labor by adapting school models to local seasonal conditions.
  • Promote girl-child education as an institutional barrier against early child marriage and adolescent pregnancy.
  • Re-integrate dropouts and out-of-school rural children into the mainstream secondary education system.

Key Interventions & Institutional Facilities:

  • Non-Formal Primary Education (NFPE): Implemented in partnership with BRAC, GKS operates community-anchored NFPE schools across remote villages in Tarash (Sirajganj), Chatmohar (Pabna), and Gurudaspur (Natore). Female teachers recruited directly from the target villages deliver accelerated foundational curricula to hundreds of dropouts.
  • GKS Registered Non-Govt. Primary School: Established to provide formal primary education (Classes I–V) on permanent land at Tarash, catering specifically to underprivileged children who previously lacked access to formal schooling.
  • GKS Junior Girls High School: Founded at Madhobpur village in Tarash Upazila, this dedicated girls’ secondary institution (Classes VI–VIII) addresses the high dropout rate of female students transitioning out of primary school due to distant secondary campuses and social pressures.
  • School Management & Parent Mobilization: Monthly School Management Committee (SMC) meetings and courtyard parental assemblies build community responsibility, ensuring regular student attendance and preventing child marriage.
