Overview:

Operating along the disaster-vulnerable Jamuna River basin and the Chalan Beel, GKS prioritizes community-led disaster risk reduction (DRR), emergency relief, and climate change adaptation.

Core Objectives:

To minimize loss of life, livestock, and property during recurrent seasonal floods, river erosion, and cold waves by transforming vulnerable char settlements into resilient, self-reliant communities.

Key Interventions & Activities:

  • Inclusive Community-Based DRR (DIPECHO): Implementing Participatory Capacity & Vulnerability Assessments (PCVA) and community-driven Risk Reduction Action Plans (RRAPs) in flood-prone upazilas.
  • Resilient Infrastructure Development: Raising earthen roads and embankments to maintain school access and market connectivity during monsoons, and constructing elevated livestock shelter grounds (killas) and cluster villages for river-erosion victims.
  • Early Warning & Emergency Preparedness: Installing flood danger-level water gauge pillars, training female volunteers equipped with megaphones, and supplying First Aid units to village committees.
  • Community Food & Grain Banks: Establishing community-run rice reserves stored in airtight drums across remote wards to safeguard food security during peak flood isolation.
